Minnie Mouse and Tweety Pie return to the North Sea in Double Release!

Two grey seals, Minnie Mouse and Tweety Pie, who were rescued by Blyth Wildlife Centre have been released back into the North Sea.

The pair were admitted to Tynemouth Seal Hospital a few months ago and our incredible volunteers have worked hard to heal them and prepare them for life back in the wild. Tweety joined us weighing in 28kg and left at 38.50kg while Minnie came in at 30kg and left us at a lovely 42.36kg – both were feeding very well here and are ready to catch plenty to eat back in the ocean!

Sophie from our Seal Team said, “It’s such a heart-warming experience to see the seals return to where they belong, and bittersweet when they give you one final look back before heading into the waves!”.

Minnie Mouse headed straight for the waves and waited for Tweety Pie to find her way back to the Ocean. Both seals have made it happily into the North Sea and we wish them the very best on their adventures!

Tynemouth Seal Hospital can continue its work thanks to visitors to the aquarium and is run by aquarium staff members and volunteers.

Grey seals and their close relatives, harbour seals are both commonly seen in the North Sea. However, increasing numbers need the help of rescue centres such as the one at Tynemouth Aquarium. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to witness the incredible checks and enrichment during our daily shows!

What to do if you find an injured or distressed seal?

If you see a seal along our coastline, don’t panic! This is their natural habitat and sometimes they like to take a break from swimming to enjoy the beach. Please give the seals distance and only make a report if you suspect distress or injury by contacting BDMLR on 01825 765 546.
