Diving is a great experience where you can see loads of different species swimming around you however when you enter in the dark caves you begin to feel lonely really quickly. The colourful corals and fish have all disappeared and you can no longer see the rays of light piercing through the waves. Nothing to guide you on you journey through the deep except your trusty flashlight. Oh wait that’s not good your flashlight starts to flicker and suddenly cuts out and you are left in the darkness under the sea with no idea what’s around you. You stay very still because you don’t know if there is some spiky rocks around you or even worse a massive undiscovered type of shark with venomous fins and a taste for lonely divers with broken flashlights.

Sounds pretty scary doesn’t it? At Tynemouth Aquarium we want to give you the experience of that lonely diver with nowhere to go as you head Into the Abyss you with stand in total darkness but don’t worry there are plenty of fish in there to keep you company. Our Flashlight fish will be swimming all around you their glowing eyes lighting the way. This fish is so difficult to show unless in darkness as they are very sensitive to light which is why this quirky exhibit makes them feel so at home. If you want to learn more about how these Flashlight fish are able to survive in these dark environments read more about them below.
